By Marco Baudinelli
It is a great satisfaction for the Carrara Academy, and for me personally, to finally attain this goal we set ourselves when I was first appointed director.

It has taken many years and a certain stubbornness, but with the moral support of the Fine Arts Department and the financial backing of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Carrara we have attained the first result.
This exhibition, “D'après Canova,” on the masters of the 19th century, is only the first step in a process that should arrive at its destination within two or three years and permanently organize the whole of our prestigious collection of plaster casts in an urban circuit which will involve not only the restored Palazzo Binelli but also the Academy and the Museum of San Francesco.
This is the commitment that the Mayor of Carrara has embraced in person and we have no doubt that it will be pursued to a successful conclusion.
Then Carrara will finally open the doors of its priceless heritage to the public and will pay a debt of gratitude to its masters who emerged from the Academy of Carrara to take its marble and prestige to the world.
I owe my first thanks to all the colleagues who first supported and then worked on this project, to Mariella Zoppi with whom we began it, to Simone Caffaz who shared it and continued it with enthusiasm, to Alba Macripò with her valuable advice, to Alberto Pincione, without whose sensibility nothing would have been achieved.
