Marble alone is Immortal
The theatre is the arc of the Apuan Alps, the scene Carrara, the city of marble, the backdrop is the glare of the live rock face in the quarry.
Henry Moore goes over to a block of White statuary.
"Excuse me, but what are you going to do with a hammer and chisel?"
Angelo Mangiarotti is the questioner, his voice simulating disapproval.
"They want to take a snape of me,"
Moore replies with amusement, pointing to a nearby pair of tourists fiddling with a camera.
