Marble is a metamorphic rock mostly made of calcium carbonate. Its name comes from the Greek μάρμαρον (mármaron) or μάρμαρος (mármaros), which means "bright stone", brightness being no doubt one of its most outstanding features.
Marble is created by a metamorphic process; sedimentary rocks, such as dolomite and limestone, re-crystallise the calcium carbonate into calcite or dolomite crystals. The combined effect of temperature and pressure during the conversion of sedimentary rock into marble recomposes the matter.
Different shades of Marble are the result of mineral impurities in the rock (clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, flint nodules, and so on).
White marble , the most famous type being White Carrara Marble, is generated by impurity-free calcareous rocks, and this accounts for its rarity and value.
The glossiness of white marble is the result of the low refractive index of calcite, which lets light seep into the surface before it is reflected off it.
Because of this, Marble has been one of the best and most sought-after materials since time immemorial.
