Marc Newson’s design for Aquariva started from a unique concept which uses an equally unique material for the deck and bridge, a laminated fabric (phenolic compound) that mimics wood. The material was developed in the early twentieth century, a precursor of fiberglass. It combines a natural appearance and texture with much greater durability than wood. To attained a hi-tech touch, while preserving the tradition and elegance of classic Riva watercraft, Newson chose an unusual material in boat design: anodized aluminum instead of steel and chromed brass.
“Postwar Italian design was a great inspiration. My career was undoubtedly influenced by the ability of the Italians to excel in many areas of design,” says Marc Newson. “This influence is clearly visible in Aquariva by Marc Newson, my first design project for the historic Italian marque.”

Marc Newson has great respect for the original Aquariva project designed by Officina Italiana Design. Without altering its external lines he has made some profoundly innovative changes, such as a new design for the transom, a wraparound windshield in laminated glass and the double doors leading to the cabin.
“Aquariva by Marc Newson is a natural extension of the artist’s work with planes and automobiles. The result is a brilliant blend of form and function, looking back to La Dolce Vita of the 1950’s and 1960’s and forward to the latest trends in nautical design,” commented Larry Gagosian, owner of the Gagosian Gallery in New York, which has promoted and hosted an exhibition of Newson’s objects.
